Canadian Hip-Hop History: Part 2

The next song I can really remember from my very early days of watching Muchmusic is Dream Warriors' - My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style. This was never one of my favorites, but it was one of the first, so it gets a mention. Check the video here.

The next phase of my devoted hip hop listening was heavily influenced by Reggae and for a long time the only thing I wanted was to visit Jamaica, I was obsessed with the country for a few years.
Snow, when I was 10/11 years old that word meant a lot more to me than just the shitty white stuff that covers the ground for half the year. Informer had me hooked from the second I heard it. Before the video came out, muchmusic had Snow do the song live in a gondola going up some mountain. I'm pretty sure I taped that and wore out the vhs before I ever got my hands on the full album, which was also a tape. There were a bunch of songs on that tape that I loved: Lonely Monday Morning, Creative Child, Lady With the Red Dress but none got anywhere near as popular as Informer.

The next song was Raggadeath's - One Life. This song was actually very important in my musical evolution as it was one of the first times I was exposed to a heavier sound, which would get heavier and more brutal as I got older. I remember the video for the song featuring snowboarding and thats what initially got me interested in the song. I vividly remember asking my mom to buy the One Life cd for me, but as soon as she saw that the band name had "death" in it it was a no go. Could that be why I'm so into death metal now? This isn't the actual video, I couldn't find it, but check out the song anyways.

Flu Sick Sucks

This whole weekend as been a complete waste of life for me, having the flu makes you not want to do a single thing. So all I have done all weekend is sit on the couch and play video games and feel like shit.
I went to my computer for about an hour trying to draw (which doesnt work well when youre sick) and I left my bedroom door open...only to go back and find Cash sleeping in my bed.

He really does think he is a human sometimes.

I hope this flu shit doesnt last very long, I'm tired of feeling like this.

Classic Skate Video Parts: Lavar McBride - Trilogy

I'll always remember watching the video before going skateboarding for an entire day when I was on summer break in high school. I chose this part from Trilogy because when this video came out, lines were in, and Lavar had lines upon lines upon lines.

A Winters Tale

After a week of around -40 degree weather we were finally having some nice temperatures here, which made me happy because I hate winter and snow, and I want it so be summer so I can go skateboarding! I got my hopes up of maybe being able to skateboard soon...then it goes and snows all night and most of the morning! Dammit! I am tired of this shit.

A look at the snow from our porch.

The backyard.
Someone else who can't wait for the snow to melt.
It might be awhile before my Derek can use his new bike.

I'm gonna go hit the couch because I feel like crap!

Weekend shoe fix!

I bought some new shoes on yesterday so in honor of that I'm making a shoe list, actually I decided to make numerous shoe lists and I'll post one every couple of days. To days list is firsts, so the first time I had a certain type of shoe. Here it goes...

First $100+ pair of shoes.

These are the Nike Air CB4 II.  I got these when I was in grade 8 for playing basketball in.  They had elastic straps underneath the laces to keep your feet extra snug.  Loved these babies for a long time.

First alernate colorway

I got these in grade 9, I was on the freshman basketball team and needed some new shoes for the start of the season. My family went to a wedding in Edmonton, which has the West Edmonton Mall, which is a huge mall. Went in the Footlocker saw theses bad boys and snatched them up, wore them to the wedding then all season. I was walking home from school oneday and had these bad boys in my bag, it was a wednesday and me and a friend and some girls were walking home and long story short I got my ass handed to me be 7 guys, fucked me up pretty good, but kept the shoes. I only hope those dumb fucks who worked me over are living shitty lives and hate themselves.

First 1's

Got these 3 years ago in Banff.  Munsters girlfriend came up to visit him when me and him were living in Calgary.  We decided to make a day trip out to Banff to hang out.  Went to the Footlocker and picked these up.  The salesmen was disapointed cause they were the last ones left in his size and he really wanted them.  Well to bad mister salesmen!

First skate shoes

If you know skate shoes you know the Sal 23's.  Comfy as all hellfuck and clean and sharp all at the same time, just classic skate shoes.  The man who designed them also started Elwood Clothing which made the most comfortable pair of jeans I've ever worn.

Canadian Hip-Hop History: Part 1

When I was young, like really young, I really loved "rap" music. Long before I got deep into punk then back into hip-hop then back into punk then deep into metal, I remember owning quite a few "rap" tapes. I say "rap" because when I was a kid, thats what I called it. A few days ago I was listening to some old stuff I listened to as a kid and I realized that a lot of my first era of "rap" was mainly Canadian. So here's my attempt to summarize hip-hop in Canada, according to me at least.

The first song that comes to mind that I can vividly remember listening to and trying to remember all the words to was Maestro Fresh Wes' "Let Your Backbone Slide". It came out in '89 and is still the best selling Canadian hip-hop single of all time.

Thanks to hiphopcanada's youtube channel for the video.

Sublime reunion.

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love Sublime, and in particular Bradley. So naturally the idea of a Sublime reunion seems very weird to me. I understand that there were 3 people involved in Sublime and it wasn't all Bradley. I also understand that fans would like to hear the songs live and even the possibility of a new album. But personally, I have to stand on the side that believes that this band should not be considered "Sublime". For the same reason that The Misfits should not have been called "The Misfits" once Danzig left. And for the same reason that there could never be another "Nirvana" without Cobain. I'll admit that the second incarnation of The Misfits is one of my favorite bands, and that this new Sublime singer is awesome and they sound great live. I just don't think that it's right. The other band members obviously have their owns thoughts and at the end of the day, they knew Bradley, something I could never say, and they would be the best judges of how he would interpret the new Sublime. I know if the ever tour and come near me, I'll be going, but it could never be the same.

Here's a link to a bunch of videos of their first live show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TgUhc627-I&feature=related

And a video of the new singer doing his rendition of T.I.'s "Whatever you like"
