Today was kind of a boring sunday for us at Single Second. The highlight of our day was dropping off some spring tees at Momentum Marketplace here in Saskatoon. On that note, if you're reading this and you're in Saskatoon, go see them to get our newest stuff, you should also pick up one of their hats made by Quintin like I did. Wing World

Today we finally tried out a new wing place in our neighbourhood. It's called Wing World. I had heard good things about the place and to be honest, they're wings, how could they be bad? They have a LOT of different flavours, but we all kept it pretty simple.
I got Buffalo.
Kim got Honey Garlic.
Trevor went a different route and tried the boneless ribs. But I would have to say his tasted the best, Chili Lime.
The wings/ribs were exceptional. My only problem was that they forgot to give us our fries. I'll have to try a few more flavours before I can decide whether or not this place becomes one of my favourite wings joints or not.

Garbage Pail Kids

Me and Trevor grew up with Garbage Pail Kids. They were pretty much the best thing our mom could bring us back from the store. They may have been our first introduction to comically gory art. It's too bad we don't still have all the cards. I even have the movie from 1987 on DVD, it's definitely worth a watch if you've never seen.

Just yesterday I was browsing around on tumblr and saw a few Garbage Pail Kids cards and thought I'd look up one for my own name. What I found was nothing less than mind blowing.

Could it be? Is it somehow possible that the card for both my name and my brothers name is the same fucking card?

In my search I did find one more for myself and three for Trevor. My other one sucks, but Trevor's are awesome.

If you're still not convinced that Garbage Pail Kids rule and that you should see the movie, here's the trailer to further convince you. I think you can even watch it all on youtube, you weren't going to work today anyways.

I have the regular Half Week Hardcore post, and I don't plan on stopping that one. And sometimes I post metal songs even though they don't apply. So now I'm going to start Thrash On Thursdays. The title doesn't mean I'll only pick thrash metal songs, anything that I would define as metal will be chosen.

Posting youtube videos of songs is kind of a dual purpose for us. For one, you get to listen to some of the songs we've been listening to while working on all things associated with Single Second. For two (is that right?), you might find a new band that you haven't heard before. I/we fully endorse buying music, if we can help some of our favorite artists get new fans and possibly sell some records, awesome. I know what you're thinking, bring on the metal already, that or you stopped reading a while ago because you don't like reading or you don't like metal.

The Reference Council

I was an avid reader of The Black Lodges back when it was a collective blog. It was kind of sad to see it go, and I still wish I would have grabbed one of their t-shirts but at the time the price tag was too high. Anyways, a while back I randomly came across The Wild International and found that Steven was behind it. From that I had found a twitter account and was pointed to The Reference Council by Steven. Apparently I'd already been following them on twitter but I had no idea. I've been getting quite sick of "hype" blogs lately, it's all too apparent that most if not all of these blogs are just copy/pasting entries from bigger sites. Not the case with The Reference Council, pretty much the opposite actually. It's nice to go to a site and read about someones opinions on something, not just press release after press release. Steven's also done an incredible job of putting together really, really good feature articles. So it goes without saying that we were honored to have our Black Metal shirt from our spring line show up on the site. While "hype" blogs may overlook us, real people who see through the bullshit in "streetwear" can recognize what we're doing. Thanks Steven.

At Both Ends: Final Issue Review

Initially I thought I would review every aspect of this double issue magazine. I was going to give my opinions of all the articles and interviews. After going through the magazine a number of times, I've decided if I did that 1) That would be a fucking long review and 2) It wouldn't leave a lot of the content open for those of you who haven't read it. So what I've decided to do is highlight the unique articles that appeal to me. Please note: I'm not a writer, don't expect any wordy descriptions or proper writing styles, these are just my personal opinions and thoughts. You'll also notice that I may refer to this as a magazine and not a zine, that's because based on it's size and pure quality I feel that it is pretty much a magazine.

ARTICLES
Bane Tour Diary
This piece was interesting to me because I'm a big Bane fan and also because I've always wanted to be in a band on tour. Basically the article covers a South American Bane tour from the perspective of a merch guy/roadie. The best part of the article is that we get an understanding of how the fans are in each of these countries. They're all unique in their own way. In particular, the insanity at the merch table in Chile.

Black And White And Read All Over
What we have here is basically a round table discussion on punk/hardcore zines and their relevance in today's wired(or actually wireless) culture. We get points of view from 4 different zine editors, from Las Vegas, Amsterdam, New York and Germany. I liked this article because I've also wondered a lot of the questions asked to myself. It's nice to get opinions on these issues from the people directly involved.

Remastering For Vinyl
This is a must read for anyone that enjoys or collects vinyl. It's an interview with Dave Eck on what it takes to master audio for a vinyl pressing.

Cryptozology NW
I'm really into horror movies and monsters and things of that nature, so I found it really cool that in this magazine there's kind of a directory for NW urban monster myths. It features background information on Bigfoot, Ogopogo, Cadborosaurus Willsi, The Batsquatch and The Zinesterosaurus. If you've ever wondered how these legends came to be, you'll find it in here.

The Great White North
This isn't really an article, just a map with information on all of Canada's major cities. There's a lot of facts in there that I had no idea about, so I'm sure for anyone in the US or overseas this would be a really interesting read. My favorite note is obviously the one for Saskatoon, you'll know why if you read it, but I've covered it on this blog before.

The last article we're left with is a history of At Both Ends, tools of the trade and advice sections. The history section gives an in depth look at not only how each issue was produced but some of the personal challenges Stephen faced when creating each one. And of course the tools section discusses certain tools used to create At Both Ends and the advice section offers some helpful tips to anyone wishing to try their hand at creating a zine.

Those aren't all of the features in the magazine, just the ones I found most interesting. There's lots more that deserve a read, I'm just not going to give away everything found in this magazine.

INTERVIEWS
The amount of interviews and their content is just too much for me to cover. Instead, I'll simply list all of the people interviewed in hopes that some of you may be interested enough to grab a copy for yourselves. Shook Ones, Bill Stevenson, Excursion Records, To Kill, Sainte Catherines, Verse, A Perfect Murder, Sick Of It All, Shai Hulud, Brian Clement, Anchor, Wait In Vain, Greg Bennick. There's also content featuring Brand New Unit and Sparkmarker.

REVIEWS
The reviews are one of my favorite things about this magazine. Stephen is brutally honest in his review of over 12 pages worth of full length albums, demos, splits, ep's and videos.

Some out there hate to face it that their project may get a negative review; welcome to reality. I'll be the first to admit that there were a lot of negative reviews in At Both Ends, I don't like a lot of what was sent in. Deal with the fact that not everyone enjoys something you've produced.

While I agree with some of the reviews and disagree with others, I find it refreshing to read short honest reviews. The number of reviews is incredible, I won't even start to go into specific albums, just know that there are a lot.

THE EP'S
There's no doubt that the records included in this final issue of At Both Ends are a big reason for anyone to purchase it. On one you have the newest recorded material from Bane since their anniversary ep cd I believe. The newest material from Grade since 2001. The other features 2 newer bands, Unrestrained and Between Earth And Sky. It should also be noted that these songs are exclusive to this release and won't be available anywhere else.

Bane - Non-Negotiable/Struck Down By Me (re-recorded)
Non-Negotiable is instantly a new favorite Bane song. It starts out hard and fast and keeps going until just before the end where it slows down and plays perfectly into the intro for Struck Down By Me. What I like most about about Struck Down By Me is the lyrics; questioning every aspect of christian faith and being unapologetic about it.

Grade - These Eyes Are On The Exit/Optical Portions
I'll admit I hadn't really been into Grade until a little over a year ago. That doesn't change the fact that I was really excited to hear some new material from them. Both of the songs are awesome and pick up pretty much where Headfirst Straight To Hell left off. For some reason I like These Eyes Are On The Exit a little more. I really hope Grade continues to write and make more music, these songs are proof that they're still quite good at it.

Unrestrained - Immaculate Deception/Anak Krakatau
Unrestrained comes out hard with a very metal influenced style of hardcore and a singer with a unique and powerful voice. These guys know how do do heavy, fast hardcore, and they do it very well.

Between Earth And Sky - Skin And Stone/Flow
These are definitely the most interesting songs in this release. I've never heard of Between Earth And Sky before this, which is a shame because I really like these guys. It's ironic because I usually don't like talking in songs, but their singer has an excellent narrative voice, not to mention singing voice. The lyrics on both songs are very poetic, especially on Flow. They have a great ability to convey the despair and darkness from their lyrics into the songs themselves. Needless to say, I'm quite excited to hear a lot more from them

Classic album Re-visited:Stankonia

As promised my re-visiting of Stankonia by Outkast is here. First let me fill you in on my brain thinking about this, i'm gonna go back and listen to classic albums of my life, in their entirety and than decide if the album still stacks up to being called a classic. A couple of ground rules are that these are gonna be albums, that I loved, absolutely loved the shit out of. I haven't listened to the album in the last 5 years, so it's not going to be a album that I listen to all the time now. Now that that's out of the way here we go!

Right of the bat, i'm super excited for the album, the art on the cd is terrific. It starts off with an intro that explains what Stankonia is, it's the place from which all funky things come! First 3 songs are great, "Gasonline Dreams", "So Fresh, So Clean" and "Mrs. Jackson" all still get the head moving. They don't feel 10 years old, so five tracks in and I'm loving it but I remember all of those songs, now it starts to get the part of the album that I don't remember. Songs like "I'll call before I come" and "We luv deez hoez" which I forgot, and now the I listen to them again, I remember why. Not terrible songs, but there's the song's that are great blow these away. Hearing B-Real from Cypress Hill on a song was weird. Having not heard Cypress Hill in years, the sound of his voice threw me for a loop, definately one of the worst songs on the album. Then we get to the the piece de resistance, "B.O.B." by far one of the best songs I've ever heard, and it only has two chunks of lyrics, at about the 2:14 mark, it starts into a repeating verse for the next two minutes. Many songs on the second half of the album are good but not great, but the interludes are funny. So the album as a whole is still good, to many good songs to not be still considered a classic album. One thing that really stuck out is that Andre 3000 is an amazing rapper, absolutely amazing and because of the album "The Love Below" which is full of love songs and more than rapping, I might have forgot how raw and heavy he was. Dropping N-bombs and talking about shooting people in the head isn't what I think about when 3000's name comes up now. Well there you go, "Stankonia" still does the job. Next week I'm going to check out "Live from the Pharmacy" by Guttermouth!

So as few have seen but a lot of you have heard, my first limited shirt designed by my boy Drop is set to release first of the month for Truth of a Liar!! I have printed up 75 of these shirts I have dubbed “Black Metal Liar”. I am working on getting the store up and running as we speak. As soon as it is all coded and ready the T-Shirt will be available to purchase for $30.00 CND + $6.50 S&H. I just wanted to say this is all coming together for me. A dream I always had was to have a blog and put out limited stuff. This dream is becoming a reality finally. I want to make it clear to all that this is and will remain a blog first and foremost. Any shirts or accessories (I have a few cool things in the works) I put out will be on a limited basis and once they are sold out will never be reproduced again. I may do a new shirt every few months or every 6 months, I haven’t really decided yet. I guess it will be all based on your response! Just a few minutes ago I found this organization called Knock Out Dog Fighting. This issue hits home with me, as many of you probably know, I have a "Pitbull". What I like most about this organization is not only are they working to end dog fighting, but they're also working to educate people about these dogs. There are too many people out there that would rather have the breed banned in an attempt to end dog fighting and that's clearly not the answer. Lately I've had a craving for the album "Stankonia" by Outkast, kind of like a smoker needs a cigarette. The album was stolen from my collection 6 or 7 years ago, and at the time it was one of my favorite albums of all time. So I've been thinking about the album lately, which got me to thinking if it held to up time. I've had albums which I went back to several years later and found think to be not as good as remembered, maybe it was the time in my life I was at that made them relevent, or maybe my musical palate has been refined, who knows. I fear that listening to "Stankonia" 10 years after its release will not be kind to my memories of the album as a whole. I know songs such as B.O.B. and Gasoline Dreams are still good, but how about the intros, the interludes and some of the forgotten about songs hold up. So I decided i'm going to go buy the album and sit down and listen front to back and than review it still holds up as a complete album. Hopefully I'll have the review posted up by the end of the week, and than I'll let you know what album I'm going to revist next. In the meantime, heres a little banger for ya'll!!!

Here it is. At Both Ends hardcore magazine is going out with style. After six years of documenting the hardcore world a final issue package has been released that includes a 148-page perfect bound book/magazine along with a double 7” featuring new, exclusive songs from Bane, Grade (yes, Grade!), Unrestrained (ex-Pulling Teeth/Desperate Measures) and Between Earth And Sky (ex-Trial, Catharsis, Strain). The whole package weighs in at about 1.5lbs or 650g. It’s a doozy! The package will start shipping in late November as one 7” is still at the plant.

Included is one 148-page magazine/book that compiles two new issues worth of At Both Ends Magazine and two 7” records with songs from Bane, Grade, Unrestrained (Portland, Oregon) and Between Earth And Sky. Included in the magazine are articles and interviews with Bane, Sick of it All, Verse, Shook Ones, Bill Stevenson, Sparkmarker, Anchor, Shai Hulud, Greg Bennick, Devotion, Wait In Vain, To Kill and a bunch more stuff. This is about as packed as a zine can get. The magazine is perfect bound with glossy pages and colour covers. Printing is similar to a book and is higher quality than pretty much any commercial magazine you would find in a store.

Well, someone certainly has set the bar higher. I guess if you’re going to go out do it in a way that’s going to make everyone else attempting to publish something in print basically give up. The last two issues of At Both Ends (combined as one gigantic 150+ page zine), a long-running zine based out of Vancouver, really went all out here. This thing looks great (and features the ever hairy Timm Trust of The Helm on the cover!) and features butt loads of content. The interviews are pretty good and drill Verse, Sick Of It All, Shook Ones, Wait In Vain, To Kill, Shai Hulud, Greg Bennick, Anchor, and Dave Larson, among others. To me, the strong suit for this zine has always been all the other content- an exhaustive tour diary of Bane in South America, a retrospective on Sparkmarker and Brand New Unit, a roundtable zine discussion, random tales from various punkers about their favorite places to travel, the process of vinyl mastering, Canadian geography, cryptozoology, science fiction, indie filmmaking, and the city of Tacoma. Pretty random, but completely entertaining. Weak spots are the reviews as they are mostly brief and kind of dated. Otherwise, Steve has laid down an excellent final issue. Oh, did I mention this comes with a double 7” featuring new stuff from Bane, Grade (yeah... Grade), Unrestrained, and Between Earth and Sky? Crazy!

Everyone hears this question far too often. You'd think with the vast number of watch companies with styles to match every person and their budget that this question should have died off. I'll admit I haven't worn a watch since around 2004, and before 2001 I barely ever wore one. For a while my mentality was "I have a cell phone that I always have with me, why would I need a watch?". Well, the answer is, to look like a grown up and not a fucking 14 year old. Fortunately for me I got a watch as a christmas present and I can now check my wrist like a normal person and I'll never have to ask what the time is.

I like that it's simple, easy to read, not gigantic and most importantly, it's black. Thanks Mom and Dad!

I've read lots and lots of books in my lifetime, stacks on stacks! A book I got for Christmas that I asked for is called level 26 and it is a very intense book. It is co-written by Anthony Zucker, the creator of the CSI franchise. Not only is the subject matter pretty intense but the artwork in the book, is outstanding and very dark. A quick premise of the book is that there is a serial killer who is so good that they create add another level onto the original 25 levels of killers just for him. He's crazy, intense and believes what he is doing is good, all great traits in a killer bad guy. For some reason lazy killers just don't resonate with the kids. There's only one guy who can catch the killer but he's retired so they give him the good ol' "just one more job" "but i'm done, i'm retired" "but you're the best" So that's the begining of the story. So not only does it have a rad bad guy, unwilling good guy, cool story, awesome art work but it also has a interactive website! So you go to and at certain parts of the book it gives you a code, you go and enter it in the code box and you get little videos of what's going on in the book at that time. It's really neat. Production values on the videos aren't top notch, but they are good, and the acting is decent enough. Also on the site is all sorts of fan submitted videos, most of which are creepy as shit. So head on over there and check it out, check out the book and stay scared.

I've been away from the wired world since last Thursday. I could have brought my laptop with me, but when you see where I was, you'll understand why I decided to leave it at home.

Skate shoes are our shit at Single Second. We've both skateboarded since around 1995. I've had love affairs with a couple of brands, you couldn't tell me to buy a different shoe once I was stuck on a brand, until they all eventually started to suck for me (DC, DVS, Lakai, ES, Circa). I still kinda like Circa, but not very much anymore. But one brand that has been solid for me for quite a while now has been Fallen. I like the way pretty much every design fits, and I am partial to their use of a lot of black colorways. So here's a couple of my favorite skate shoes from this year, mostly Fallens.

Sure, it would be easy to just pick a Single Second shirt (Chthonic Triad), but I wont.
I like t-shirts that are either weird, will offend people or will get people thinking, a combination of all 3 is obviously the best.
It is impossible to remember all of tees that came out in one year, so my best one is the one that I remembered the most and stuck in my head.
